Portlandia: Is It Local? (by ifc)
Had a total “Portlandia” moment at Turnip Truck. Asked how to pick out a good local Heirloom Tomato. Reminded me of the “Is it Local?” bit.
We bought:
1 large heirloom tomato
Bunch of Bok Choy
Red Leaf Lettuce
1 avocado
2 Oranges
2 Apricots
Small Bag of raw sunflower seeds
Small Bag of raw pumpkin seeds
1 “Raw Revolution” Spiralina Bar to munch on the way home!
This trip totaled $22.00. That is not bad at all for probably 3 meals and snacks for two people. We also envisioned shopping locally every other day (or maybe every day!) as we plan our meals. Would really be a wise eco-footprint move. We wouldn’t be driving 25 miles to go to Trader Joe’s. Bringing all these beautiful foods home made me want to clean the fridge- so that is what I am about to do!
Another bonus to going RAW- we get to look forward to desserts from ANI PHYO’s Raw Dessert book:
http://www.amazon.com/Anis-Raw-Food-Desserts-Delectable/dp/0738213063/ref=pd_sim_b_1
We have tested of these recipes and encouraged friends and family to do the same! This book was a wedding gift to us! SWEET! Literally!
I also want to make this!
PEAR SALAD with DRIED CHERRY VINAIGRETTE:

Breakfast:
JUST GREEN TEA by Honest Tea (Purified Water, organic green tea).
IT’S ALIVE SALAD by Turnip Truck in East Nashville (crunchy sprouts, carrots, broccoli, shoyu, agave, apple cider vinegar).
QUESTION I HAD: Is green tea ok to drink on a raw food diet? Is agave ok to consume on a raw food diet?
Snack:
5 Kalamata Olives
Drink:
Purified Water with Lemon
Snack:
Half of a Raw Revolution Spirulina Bar and 5 baby carrots
Snack:
Valencia Orange with Pumpkin Seeds
I have found that epiphanies happen at the beach. The water generally has to be of the salt water variety. While traveling to the Crystal Coast of NC for a week of sand, sun and surf I let my intuition guide me to choosing a book for beach reading. This book turned out to be “The Live Food Factor” by Susan Schenck.

I have been eating a VEGAN diet for over 2 years now and after this week at the beach- a RAW food diet seemed to be the natural progression.
I will share my experiences here on this blog. If you are unfamiliar with the VEGAN lifestyle I urge you to read SKINNY BITCH or SKINNY BASTARD. Easy and sometimes humorous reads- these books are also chock full of information to get you started to a newer, fitter, happier, healthier (and yes skinnier by default) YOU!
If you are unfamiliar with the RAW FOOD lifestyle- let’s learn together. I wouldn’t say I am totally unfamiliar with it. I have been reading and educating myself on the amazing benefits of this way of eating for some time now. I think it’s the best thing to understand and also appreciate the healing benefits of food so you can develop of whole new relationship with meal time. You will truly be filled with gratitude if you know that everything that you consume is filled with energy and life force!
There are great recipes in “The Live Food Factor”, but I also checked out this website today as well for ideas:
